"Eureka !" - shouted great Archimedes, when a brilliant idea occurred to his mind. Such moments add to the development of science, and the Humankind moves forward due to the efforts of creative people.
How to awaken in children the joy of creativity and exploration? How to develop their talents and ability to think not only logically but creatively, courageously and originally? This is a big challenge!!
It is well known that basic thinking structures are already formed by the age of 10-12, and that is why it is necessary to start developing creative and cognitive abilities of children as early as possible, since their late formation becomes less effective. Taking this into account, Dr. Olha His, a psychologist and mathematician (PhD), developed and implemented a Teaching Program on Logical and Non-standard Thinking for pupils of elementary school. This is an integrated course, interfacing logic, mathematics, and psychology.
She proposes a series of newly developed tasks and puzzles that would stimulate the child's brain to think in both logical and creative manner, awaken faculties of creativity and give the joy of finding-solutions to different kinds of problems.
Five books have been authored by her. The First book “In the Land of Thinking” (www.mysl.lviv.ua) was co-authored with Oles’ Yackiv and is a general book for all ages. She has written four more Text Books: "The Planet of Thinking" (Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4-th grades), for children ages 6 to 12. All the books are written in an easy to read and fun filled format in Ukrainian language.
The program and books are oriented at the development of the main aspects of cognitive activity and aim at stimulating children’s thinking; teaching basic operations of thinking, developing quick-wittedness, spatial imagination, memory, and attention. It takes into account the development of basic aspects of thinking on both verbal and non-verbal levels. The objectives of the Course are as follows:
1) To form children” ability to analyse and synthesize;
2) Generalise and concretise;
3) Abstract and transfer;
4) Classify, compare and single out the most essential;
5) Think by analogy;
6) See differences and regularities;
7) Find cause and effect relationships; and
8) Also to develop the skills to think by association and to search for non-standard approaches to solving problems
